Pinene

Category: Scientific · Level: Expert

Pinene is a cannabis terpene with a fresh pine aroma, studied for potential bronchodilating, anti-inflammatory, and memory-enhancing properties.

Alpha-pinene and beta-pinene are bicyclic monoterpenes widely distributed in nature, found in pine trees, rosemary, basil, and cannabis. Alpha-pinene is one of the most abundant terpenes in certain cannabis cultivars. It produces a distinctive pine and fresh herbal aroma. Pharmacologically, alpha-pinene has been studied as a bronchodilator, acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (potentially counteracting THC-induced short-term memory impairment), and anti-inflammatory agent. It is proposed to counteract some cognitive effects of THC through its interaction with the cholinergic system, making it of particular clinical interest in medical cannabis formulation.
