Anandamide

Anandamide is an endocannabinoid produced naturally by the human body, often called the 'bliss molecule,' that activates the same receptors as THC.
Anandamide (N-arachidonoylethanolamine, AEA) is an endogenous lipid mediator and the first endocannabinoid to be discovered (Devane et al., 1992). It is named from the Sanskrit word 'ananda' meaning bliss. Anandamide is synthesized on-demand in neurons and acts as a retrograde neurotransmitter, primarily activating CB1 receptors. It is rapidly degraded by the enzyme FAAH (fatty acid amide hydrolase). Anandamide is involved in regulating mood, appetite, pain, sleep, and memory. Its structural similarity to THC explains why THC mimics many effects of endogenous endocannabinoid signaling. FAAH inhibitor drugs are being investigated to increase anandamide levels therapeutically.
