Tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA) is the non-psychoactive acidic precursor to THC found in raw, unheated cannabis.
THCA is the carboxylic acid precursor of THC and is the most abundant cannabinoid in raw cannabis flower. Unlike THC, THCA does not produce psychoactive effects at room temperature because its molecular structure does not efficiently bind CB1 receptors. When cannabis is heated (smoked, vaporized, or cooked), THCA undergoes decarboxylation to form THC. THCA is being studied independently for potential anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties without psychoactivity. Product labeling in regulated markets typically displays both THCA and THC content, with 'Total THC' calculated accounting for the conversion factor.
