Decarboxylation

Decarboxylation is the chemical process by which THCA is converted to THC through the application of heat, activating the psychoactive properties of cannabis.
Decarboxylation is a chemical reaction that removes a carboxyl group from a molecule, releasing carbon dioxide. In cannabis, this process converts THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid) to THC, and CBDA to CBD, by applying heat. Raw cannabis contains predominantly acidic cannabinoids (THCA, CBDA) which are non-psychoactive. Smoking, vaporization, and baking (for edibles) all trigger decarboxylation. The process occurs at temperatures above approximately 105°C for THCA. Precise temperature and time control during decarboxylation is critical in medical cannabis preparation to maximize potency and preserve terpenes.
