High

Category: Slang & Culture · Level: Beginner · Slang term

A 'high' is the colloquial term for the psychoactive state experienced after consuming THC-containing cannabis products.

The term 'high' refers to the altered state of consciousness produced by THC and other psychoactive cannabinoids acting on the endocannabinoid system, primarily through CB1 receptor activation in the brain. Effects associated with being 'high' include euphoria, altered time perception, heightened sensory experience, increased appetite, relaxation, and in some cases, anxiety or paranoia at high doses. The intensity and character of a high depend on dose, cannabinoid and terpene profile, consumption method, tolerance, and individual factors. In clinical and regulatory contexts, the preferred term is 'intoxication' or 'psychoactive effect' rather than 'high.'
