Die Decarboxylierung ist der chemische Prozess, bei dem THCA durch Anwendung von Wärme in THC umgewandelt wird, wodurch die psychoaktiven Eigenschaften von Cannabis aktiviert werden.
Die Decarboxylierung ist eine chemische Reaktion, die eine Carboxylgruppe von einem Molekül entfernt und Kohlendioxid freisetzt. Im Cannabis wandelt dieser Prozess THCA (Tetrahydrocannabinolsäure) in THC und CBDA in CBD um, indem Wärme angewendet wird. Rohes Cannabis enthält überwiegend saure Cannabinoide (THCA, CBDA), die nicht psychoaktiv sind. Rauchen, Verdampfen und Backen (für Esswaren) lösen die Decarboxylierung aus. Der Prozess erfolgt bei Temperaturen über etwa 105 °C für THCA. Eine präzise Kontrolle von Temperatur und Zeit während der Decarboxylierung ist kritisch bei der Herstellung von medizinischem Cannabis, um die Potenz zu maximieren und Terpene zu erhalten.
