Il cariofillene è un terpeno della cannabis con un aroma speziato e pepato che agisce in modo unico come un agonista del recettore CB2, rendendolo sia un terpeno che un cannabinoide funzionale.
Il beta-cariofillene è un sesquiterpene biciclico presente nella cannabis, nel pepe nero, nei chiodi di garofano e nel rosmarino. Si distingue tra i terpeni in quanto è l'unico terpeno conosciuto ad attivare direttamente i recettori dei cannabinoidi — in particolare i recettori CB2, che sono coinvolti nelle risposte immunitarie e infiammatorie.
