Cannabis ruderalis is a subspecies of cannabis native to Central Asia, characterized by automatic flowering based on age rather than photoperiod.
Cannabis ruderalis is classified as the third subspecies of Cannabis (alongside sativa and indica), originating from the harsh climates of Central Asia, Russia, and Eastern Europe. Unlike indica and sativa, ruderalis plants flower based on maturity rather than photoperiod, typically within 20–30 days of germination. Ruderalis plants are small, hardy, and typically produce low cannabinoid concentrations in their native form. However, their autoflowering genetic trait has been systematically introduced into commercial cannabis breeding programs to create autoflowering hybrid cultivars that combine the potency of modern strains with the convenience and speed of ruderalis genetics.
