Cannabis tinctures are liquid concentrates produced by dissolving cannabis extractives in a carrier solvent, typically ethanol or vegetable glycerin. Administered sublingually (under the tongue), tinctures allow for rapid absorption through the mucous membranes, with onset typically within 15–45 minutes — faster than edibles but slower than inhalation. Tinctures are a preferred consumption method in medical cannabis programs due to precise dose measurement via dropper, discreet administration, and absence of respiratory risks. They are one of the original pharmaceutical forms of cannabis preparation, used historically before prohibition.
