Seed-to-Sale
Category: Regulatory · Level: Intermediate
Seed-to-sale refers to the track-and-trace regulatory framework that monitors cannabis from cultivation through to retail sale to ensure compliance and prevent diversion.
Seed-to-sale tracking is a regulatory compliance methodology used in licensed cannabis markets to maintain a complete chain of custody record for all cannabis plants and products. Regulatory agencies require licensed operators to tag every plant (often using RFID or barcode systems) and record all transfers, processing activities, waste disposal, and retail transactions in a state or national database. Common tracking systems include Metrc, BioTrackTHC, and Franwell. The system is designed to prevent diversion of legal cannabis into illegal markets, detect theft or fraud, and support regulatory audits. Seed-to-sale compliance is a significant operational cost for cannabis businesses.
